Is it legal to play real money on online gambling?

Question by Eleo Terio: Is it legal to play real money on online gambling?
I’m legal age & living in Texas.. also, can I use a VISA gift card for deposit & withdraw? Btw, I have a full time job but it’s not enough to pay down my credit card bills.

Depends on the site you are playing at and the state in which you live. The federal government has made it “legal” to gamble online; however, this is for intrastate gambling. This means that you can game within your state on a site that is regulated by your state. As long as none of the gaming does not cross your state borders you are fine (it then becomes interstate commerce which only Congress has the right under the Constitution to regulate). The problem is that I do not believe that any states (someone please correct me if you know otherwise) have enacted any regulation which would make online gaming legal in their state. As such, it is currently illegal.

To do it online you’d need to know which committee is involved or track a specific bill… or you could simply call your congressman’s office and ask.

Hmm…
I’m highly skeptical of ALL lucrative online endeavors, be it random, skill-based, what have you. But some places like Party Poker or whatever, I have heard from close family members that they actually do work, but I can’t be certain of this.
Before you go jumping into something like this, be sure you know where your money’s going – and, more importantly, if it’s secure. The Internet is a breeding ground for identity thiefs, scams, etc.

Anyone know where I can find usage and demographics for online gambling?

Question by Mark: Anyone know where I can find usage and demographics for online gambling?
I’m seeking:
* Usage globally and by country – United States, UK, Mexico, Spain, other Spanish-speaking countries and/or G8
* Popularity and spending for each game (poker, blackjack, etc)
* Usage by ethnic background (Hispanic information especially)
* Language preference and/or availability (especially Spanish)

Unfortunately, I don’t have money for an expensive market research report so thanks in advance for thoughtful replies!

the American Gaming Association has a “States of the States” breakdown:

http://www.americangaming.org/

harrah’s does their own “Profile of an American Gambler” study each year:

http://www.harrahs.com/harrahs-corporate/about-us-profile-of-gambler.html

only caveat is that both studies were corporate funded by reputable but fundamentally pro-gaming institutions, so the credibility of the results is to your own discretion.
